Overview

Our 3-day Merzouga desert tour from Marrakech crosses the High Atlas to the Sahara. You’ll visit Aït Ben Haddou and Todra Gorge, ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, and spend the night in a Berber desert camp before returning to Marrakech on day three.

Our 3-day Merzouga desert tour from Marrakech is the classic way to reach the Sahara — three days that carry you from the red city, over the High Atlas, and into the great dunes of Erg Chebbi. Our team is based in Morocco, and we’ve shaped this route around the moments that matter: the mountain passes, the kasbahs, and that first sunset when the sand turns gold.

What you’ll see on this Marrakech to Merzouga tour

This Sahara desert tour from Marrakech follows the fabled Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. On day one you cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass and stop at Aït Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen village and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Day two winds through Dades and Todra Gorge before the dunes rise ahead. By evening a camel trek carries you into Erg Chebbi to a Berber camp, where dinner, drums, and a sky thick with stars round off the day.

Why book this 3-day Merzouga desert tour

Every 3-day Merzouga desert tour we run is a complete package — private transport, accommodation, your camel trek, and meals are arranged, so there’s nothing to piece together yourself. Because our team lives here, you get the local read: when to leave to beat the heat, which viewpoints are worth the stop, and a camp chosen for its silence rather than its crowd.

Is the 3-day tour long enough for the Sahara?

For most travellers, yes. Three days gives you a genuine night in the dunes and the two great gorges without rushing, and it’s the reason the 3-day desert tour from Marrakech remains the most popular way to see Erg Chebbi. If you’d like a slower pace with two nights in the desert, our 4-day Merzouga route adds more time in the sand.

Frequently asked questions

It’s a long haul — close to a full day on the road each way, around 8 to 9 hours with stops.

That’s exactly why the 3-day Merzouga desert tour works so well: it breaks the journey with Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges and mountain viewpoints, instead of one exhausting dash across the country.

Your package covers private air-conditioned transport with a driver, one night in a hotel or riad and one night in a desert camp, breakfast and dinner each day, and the sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi.

Lunches, drinks and tips aren’t included, which keeps the price transparent and lets you choose where you eat on the road.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) bring the kindest desert weather — warm days, cool nights, clear skies.

Summer is hot but very doable with early starts, and winter days are pleasant while nights turn cold, so the camp lays on extra blankets. Every season has its own light on the dunes, so there’s no wrong time to come.

Yes. The Berber camps we use offer proper beds, private or shared tents, clean bathrooms and hot meals — a world away from roughing it.

You’ll dine under the stars, often with live drumming around the fire, then wake early for sunrise over the dunes. It’s one of the most memorable nights of any Morocco trip.

Absolutely. This 3-day Merzouga desert tour runs as a private trip for you and your group, so the pace, the stops and the departure time are yours.

Prefer to share the adventure and the cost? A small-group option is available too. Either way you get the same route, the same camp, and the same local guiding.

Very little. Most of your time is spent travelling by vehicle between sights, with short, easy strolls at Aït Ben Haddou and Todra Gorge.

The camel trek into camp lasts around an hour and is gentle; if you’d rather not ride, a short 4×4 transfer to the camp can be arranged. The tour suits most ages and fitness levels.
